From our studio in Canada to your desk

Welcome to the very first post on the Hex Pens blog! If you are reading this, you likely have a brand new Lucent fountain pen in your hands, ready to jot down your next big idea.

And while our Lucent series may look sleek and minimal, there is one important detail every writer should know:

Lucent fountain pens must be inked from the section (nib) end - never from the end cap.

We designed the Lucent to be a reliable tool for thinkers and creators. However, because of its unique eyedropper design, there is a tiny bit of physics you need to know to keep the ink inside the pen until you're ready to write.

The Golden Rule: Inking from Section Side Only

If you take only one thing away from this guide, let it be this: Always ink the pen from the section end (where the nib is).

We know it looks tempting to open the end cap and pour ink in, but resist the urge!

Here is the science: If you introduce ink from the end-cap side, air pressure immediately forces that ink to gush straight out through the nib tip. If this has happened to you, don't worry - your pen isn't broken or missing a part. It’s just physics doing its job.

The end cap is designed solely for cleaning purposes, not for filling.

How to Ink Your Lucent Correctly (Step-by-Step)

To ensure a perfect fill and zero mess, follow this simple guide found in your instruction booklet:

  • Identify the Ends: The barrel is tapered. The end cap side is the end with the smaller diameter. Avoid opening this side for filling.
  • Unscrew the Section: Hold the barrel and unscrew the grip section (the part holding the nib and feed).
  • Fill the Barrel: Using an eyedropper or syringe, fill the barrel with ink only from the section side (the wider opening).
  • Seal it Up: Screw the section back into the barrel securely.
